Vision
Harbor Presbyterian Church desires to be a church that is both in the city of San Diego and for the city of San Diego. We strive to be for the city by demonstrating mercy and love toward those in need throughout the city. We do this by connecting volunteers to the opportunities for service, by connecting your passion to a program that can use it to impact the lives of others, and by connecting financial resources to organizations that can use them to meet the needs of those in our city.
Our basic strategy is to gather individuals into teams and then connect the team to a ministry partner where they can serve and put their passion into practice. To learn more about our ministry partners and the ways to be involved with one of our teams, click on the links below.
Menu of Opportunities to serve the Homeless
1. Granola Walk – contact Rob Graham - . Monday or Friday between 11am-2pm,walk with Harbor staff for 1 hr. in LJ-UTC area, handout water & granola bars, meet homeless, hear stories
2. Intervention Team – contact Bob Klein or 858.442.4459. When a homeless person is ready to get off the street and into a recovery program, work with Harbor staff taking person through various steps toward sobriety.
3. Food Recovery – contact Maurice Loucks or 858.736.4694. Several nights each week we pick up bakery products that would be tossed and take them to Teen Challenge, a rehabilitation program for substance abusing individuals. Opportunity to meet some residents and be introduced to the program if delivery of the baked goods is during the day. Times of pick ups and deliveries are flexible.
4. San Diego Food Bank – contact Melanie Handley . About once per month we have a group of adults and kids go to the Mira Mesa area facility to stack boxes, cans and crates of dry food for distribution to working poor in various parts of the city.
Other Opportunities to serve San Diego
1. Hickman School Cleanup – Help MMHS students cleanup Mira Mesa and get a quality community service experience by providing adult supervision and friendship, Wednesdays from 3-4:30pm. Contact Bryce Hales for more information - or 858.354.9880.
2. Paint Utility Boxes – Join with us as we help HEROES of Mira Mesa paint the utility boxes in Mira Mesa to beautify our city on Sat Nov. 8 from 8-10am. Contact Bryce Hales for more information - or 858.354.9880.
3. Harbor Orphanage Ministry Efforts (HOME): If you are interested in the next trip to the Hacienda orphanage in Tijuana contact Yolanda Wong at or 858-531-9268 to sign up or for further information.
4. Tutoring – help 1st graders increase their reading skills; Tuesday and Wednesday, 2:30-3:00pm at Ericson Elementary. Contact Mike Stringer -
5. Elderly Ministry
a. Emeritus – Assist with a Sunday night Bible study at Emeritus in Clairemont. Contact Albert or Megan at .
